On Location :: McCormick’s Creek Fire Tower

Kevin Rader for Only in Indiana at McCormick’s Creek.  A lovely spot to visit obviously for the great outdoors and the creek but I love these fire towers and here is one of Indiana’s jewels right here.  In 1930 we had a series of these towers mostly located in the southern part of Indiana.  The goal originally was to blanket the state without a gap.  They would build towers like this throughout the state.

Didn’t quite work out that way.  Thirty three were built but by the 1970’s they started using airplanes.  Here you can see where the towers were located. A couple to the north but most located to the south.

By 1967 this tower fell into disrepair but a decision was made to restore the tower.  Here is an old picture of what it looked like in 1939 to give you an idea of just how long it has been here.

It is open once again now thanks to donations and the Department of Natural Resources.

Just another one of Indiana jewels we like to show you on Only in Indiana. Visit McCormick’s Creek in Owen County and see for yourself.
